Tasting Room-Wolf Winery

Visiting San Luis Obispo (nicknamed SLO) is the perfect way to relax and enjoy the beautiful California weather of the Central Coast. San Luis Obispo has more than 30 wineries and vineyards with excellent Chardonnay and Pinot Noir and its one of the top 10 easy and fun things to in SLO. The wineries and tasting rooms are within close distant of each other which makes visiting multiple wineries easy to do in a short amount of time. Tasting rooms are friendly and expertly manage. Come to SLO for a great day of relaxing wine tasting. Some of the best SLO wineries are located close to San Luis Obispo Airport.  You can easily fly into San Luis Obispo and Uber to the different wineries which makes wine tasting one of the top 10 fun things to do in San Luis Obispo.

More details on my favorite wineries in the “My 5 Top Wineries in SLO”  section below

Edna Valley Winery

Edna Valley Winery Tasting Room

Edna Valley Winery Tasting Room

Edna Valley Winery is now owned by the Gallo Corporation. The tasting room is large with lots of open windows for viewing and was voted the best tasting room in San Luis Obispo . The hosts are terrific. Open daily from 10 am to 5 pm for wine tasting. Cost is $20 for 5 samples. Edna Valley Winery has lots of outdoor seating and they make both red and white wines. Come for the view and atmosphere. The wine is OK but the view is spectacular. See website for tasting details

If you only visit one winery in San Luis Obispo, you want to visit Edna Valley Winery. The parking lot is large but come early if you visit on the weekend because of the winery’s popularity. For more things to do in SLO and to visit other wineries in the San Luis Obispo County, click SLO Wineries.

 Tolosa Winery

Outdoor Patio-Tolosa Winery, San Luis Obispo, CA

Tolosa Vineyard is located in the Edna Valley, next to the San Luis Obispo Airport.  Much of the tasting experience happens outdoor in the private seating area. Come alone or with friends. You’ll be assigned a server who will pour your sample or “flights” as they are called.  Five pre-determined samples are the normal but you can ask for a more custom sample if you really know what you like.  In my opinion, Tolosa Winery has one of the best Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wines in San Luis Obispo and maybe the entire country.  The wines are a little pricey for me but well worth the cost. Greeters are friendly and fun to talk to.  Great place to bring your friends or visit solo.  Tolosa inside service area is also exquisite but this is the place you go on a nice warm day for outdoor wine tasting while watching all the private jets land at the nearby airport.  Noise from airplanes in NOT a problem.

Baileyana Winery

Outside Seating

Outside Seating

Baileyana Winery is located in Edna Valley, this winery is the perfect place to bring a picnic basket and buy wine from their facility for a fun day. The tasting room is located in a renovated 1909 historic schoolhouse. You can also sit outside for your wine tasting experience. This winery becomes very crowded on the weekend. The crowd is young and most from the local university at Cal Poly. Great atmosphere and very good wines. There’s even a grass yard to spread a blanket and bring your picnic basket.

Baileyana has great hosts who know their wines. What can be better than sipping wine in a picturesque atmosphere surrounded by vineyards, livestock and incredibly nice people. The perfect escape from the world and fun thing to do in SLO.

Open daily from 10 am to 5 pm. Tasting cost $15 for 5 samples. More details at Baileyana Tasting

Wolf Winery

Tasting Room-Wolf Winery

Wolf Winery is located in the Edna Valley, Wolf Wine Tasting Room is open daily from 11 am to 5 pm. Great outdoor patio wine tasting experience. Perfect on a nice day with friends. Great indoor tasting area too. Good place to bring your own picnic lunches and experience their wines.  In my opinion, their Riesling Wine is the best.  SLO specializes in white wines mostly of the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir variety. Checkout Wolf Winery Special Event Calendar for events.

Open daily from 11 am to 5 pm. Tasting cost $15 for 5 samples. More details on things to do at Wolf Wine Tasting

Saucelito Canyon Winery

Patio Area-Saucelito Canyon Winery, San Luis Obispo, CA

Patio Area-Saucelito Canyon Winery

Small but nice outdoor patio seating for your wine tasting experience. Located close to Edna Valley Winery, Saucelito Canyon Winery is the opposite of the very large Edna Valley Winery. Outdoor tasting area is on a cozy patio with great service and great wines. They also have indoor tasting area. When you come to SLO for wines, it’s the white wines that are their specialty.

Other San Luis Obispo Wineries

Tasting Room-Saucelito Canyon Winery, San Luis Obispo, CA

There are many great wineries in San Luis Obispo County. Most wineries are open on a daily basis between 11 am and 5 pm. See SLO Wineries to discover all the great wineries in San Luis Obispo to visit.

To make navigation easy, use your portable GPS or traffic app to find the wineries. Some wineries are located close to each other while other wineries require a longer drive. Weekends can be crowded so come early on weekends. Most of the wineries in San Luis Obispo are family run boutique wineries and they specialize in making you feel welcomed. Visiting the wineries in SLO makes for the perfect weekend escape .

Morro Bay

Kayak Rental, Morro Bay

Kayak Rental, Morro Bay

Morro Bay is 15 miles from SLO, north on Highway 1 is the beautiful seaside village of Morro Bay. You’ll know you arrive to Morro Bay by the gigantic volcanic rock in the middle of the bay.  Morro Bay Embarcadero (Strip of Walkway) is a great entertainment center with lots of gift shops, souvenirs, eateries and restaurants. It’s also a place for Whale Watching trips and boat trips around the bay. Its another fun thing to do that just a short distance from SLO.

Pismo Beach

Pismo Beach California

Pismo Beach California

Pismo Beach is located in Central California adjacent to San Luis Obispo with hotel accommodations that put you right on the California Surf. This is a great place to visit if you’re new to California and its an easy and fun thing to do that’s close to SLO. It does get crowded during summer weekends making parking difficult if you don’t get an early start. Pismo Beach can be very touristy depending on the season so prepare for expensive hotel prices during the summer.

If you’re a first time tourist to California, then you will like Pismo Beach with its boardwalk, shops and eateries typical of California beach communities. Pismo Beach Pier offers great view of the ocean and large waves crashing on the beach. There’s also a nearby beach park designed for kids called Dinosaur Caves Park.

Pismo Beach is nice but a little rocky. Good place to stay at one of the local hotels near the beach. Not exactly my favorite beach city in California because of the crowds but again, if you’re a first-timer, Pismo Beach is worth the stop.

Lodging can be expensive because of the crowds, particularly during the summer which drives up prices. Hotels on or near the beach average $300 per night during peak season. Prices drop during late fall and winter.

Farmers Market Thursday Night – Downtown San Luis Obispo

SLO Farmer's Market

SLO Farmer’s Market

Another fun thing to do is Farmers Market Downtown on Thursday night 6 pm – 9 pm located in Downtown San Luis Obispo on Higuera Street between Osos and Nipomo Street. By far the BEST Farmers Market I’ve ever experienced. There are lots of people and excitement. Great food vendors, free Wi-Fi, and a wine and beer tasting area.

BarBQ are the most popular vendors. The smell of Bar B Q fills the evening air. Some of the Bar B Q lines are tremendously long but obviously well worth the wait as locals line up every Thursday evening at their favorite vendor, usually Bar B Q related for ribs or tri tips. No room or place to sit at tables and eat so most people sit on the curb and eat. They GLADLY SIT ON THE CURB AND EAT.

This may sound chaotic but it’s such a wonderful atmosphere. Lots of different vendor selling unique things …. usually food related. Very friendly people and lots of college kids. This is a college town, home of California State Polytechnic University or Cal Poly for short.

The downtown area is a nice friendly shopping experience anytime but Thursday evening. Most of the local shops shut down and it’s all about food, especially Bar B Q. The crowds are tremendous but fun. If you’re around the area, reserve Thursday evening for the Downtown Farmers Market and COME HUNGRY !

Park in the large parking structure a few blocks away from Higuera Street at Palm and Morro Street. Use GPS or traffic app to locate the parking structure (Palm Parking Garage) : 919 Palm St., San Luis Obispo, CA 93401

It’s just a short walk (2 blocks) from the parking structure to Farmers Market on Higuera Street. Just follow the crowd …. You’ll find it ! Parking is free the first hour and $1 for several hours.
