Calico Ghost Town

Things to Do

Located off the I-15 in San Bernardino County (on the way to Las Vegas) is Calico Ghost Town. Calico was an old mining town in the late 1880’s. It was mined for silver until the mid 1890’s when silver lost its value and people left the town, essentially making it a ghost town by 1900.

In 1950, Walter Knotts purchased the property and restored this once vibrant town to look like its “heyday” back in the 1880’s. If you visit Knotts Berry Farm, you will see a striking resemblance to Calico Ghost Town minus the amusement rides of course.

Calico Ghost Town is a fun historical place to visit and spend the day. There are lots of shops and small eateries. Go to Lane’s General Shop for the best sugar coated nuts you’ll ever eat.

Lots of candy shops, woodwork crafts, handcraft souvenirs, soaps, lotion and mineral rock gifts shops, along with a nice restaurant.

You’ll see the Calico House Restaurant which is a great place to grab lunch if you’re hungry.  The restaurant has an “Old West” feel and perfect stop if you been on the road traveling for a long time.

As you continue your walk up Main Street, you’ll see Lanes General Shop.  Stop here and get the sugar coated nuts. It’s one of the best treat your taste buds will ever experience. Continuing on Main Street, you’ll see lot of buildings and activity that give you the feeling of the Old West.

Located on the north end of the town is the Calico Odessa Railroad.  The cost is about $5 per person and it takes you on a 15 minute ride around the town with a narration of the history and popular landmarks. Nothing fast or exciting but relaxing and educational as you hear the pre-recorded narration of the rich history of Calico.  Trains runs regularly from 9 am – 5 pm.
